“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
— Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)

What if everything you’ve been told about overcoming addiction is only half the story?

We’ve been taught we have two choices, two paths that could not be more different:

Path #1: Abstinence.
This is the well-worn road of 12-step programs. It’s a lifeline for many, and I honor that. But it demands a total transformation: work the steps, get a sponsor, live by a hundred unwritten rules, and attend meetings for life. The mantra is clear: “What are you willing to change to stay sober?” Any resemblance to your old life must be left behind. For those approaching their bottom, this structure can be a godsend.

Path #2: Relapse.
This is the path of continued struggle. It’s the DUI, the lost job, the broken relationships, the endless negotiation with yourself at 3 AM. It’s the guilt, the shame, and the slow, painful surrender to the bottle or the pill.

For decades, we’ve been told these are our only options: surrender to the program or surrender to the addiction.

But what if you’ve tried Path #1 and found that the script doesn’t fit? What if you’re one of the heretics and misfits of recovery?

  • You’ve collected 30-day chips like poker tokens.
  • You’ve rolled your eyes at the platitudes on the wall.
  • You’ve asked the tough question: *“If this works, why does every independent study put the long-term success rate at 10% or less?”*
  • You’re the high-functioning alcoholic, exhausted from the math of appearing normal.
  • You’re the Christian, sick of the shame and being told to just “pray harder.”
  • You’re the family member, heartbroken from the “spin-dry” cycle of 30-day rehabs.

If you’ve ever…

  • Counted beers at noon and lied about the count by happy hour…
  • Dreaded the mirror more than the hangover…
  • Felt the guilt and shame driving you insane…

…then this message is for you.

I am here to tell you with absolute certainty: There is a Third Way.

It is not for everyone. But for those for whom the binary choice has become its own kind of prison, there is another path. It is a Truce.

A truce is not a war. It is not a white-knuckled surrender or a chaotic relapse. It is a negotiated peace. It is a disciplined, faith-based approach that says:

  • You can address your drinking without signing away your entire identity to a single program.
  • You can find a middle ground between total abstinence and destructive abuse.
  • Your journey can be led by your own partnership with God, radical self-honesty, and a clear-eyed plan.

This Third Way isn’t about rebellion for its own sake. It’s about freedom. It’s the path I have walked for 13 years. I am not in jail, a mental institution, or a grave. I am living a life of purpose and peace.

The book Grateful Truce and this website are dedicated to exploring this path—for the heretics, the misfits, and the millions who are still searching for an answer that actually works for them.

You are not alone. Your struggle is not a sign of failure; it may be a sign that you were meant for a different path.
