“The Math of Moderation: How I Broke the ‘One More’ Cycle”
The Alcoholic Equation We All Know
For decades, my drinking followed a simple, destructive formula:
- 1 beer = “Just one more”
- 2 beers = “Two more won’t hurt”
- 4 beers = “Let’s make it 8”
- 8 beers = “Hello, floor”
Sound familiar? Whether your poison was tequila, wine, or something stronger, I bet your cravings followed the same exponential spiral—leading to hangovers, shame, and broken promises.
Why We Surrender to AA or Rehab
It’s no wonder we flock to:
- AA rooms (5-10% success rate)
- Rehab (Same dismal odds)
- Antabuse (Miserable vomiting)
- Methadone clinics (Trading one shackle for another)
We’re desperate for any light in that tunnel—especially when:
☑️ Spouses are berating us
☑️ Families are ashamed
☑️ Employers are firing us
But what if there’s another way?
The First Step (Before Any Moderation Math)
Find Jesus. Not a “higher power.” Not the 12 steps. Christ Himself.
For me, it happened on Day 7 of lockdown rehab:
- I bought a Bible.
- I read the red letters.
- I got on my knees and asked for real help.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28 (ESV)
This wasn’t “spiritual advice”—it was my lifeline.
The Hope You Won’t Hear in Meetings
Today, I:
☑️ Drink occasionally (without spiraling)
☑️ Have periods of intentional sobriety
☑️ Enjoy a strong marriage
☑️ Live with Jesus as my sponsor
This isn’t “recovery” as the system defines it. It’s a truce—and it’s possible for you too.
Tomorrow’s Post Sneak Peek
We’ll dive into:
- The drinking calendar (how to plan moderation)
- Craving hacks (math that actually works)
- Why “dry drunks” are proof abstinence isn’t enough
Today’s Challenge:
If you’re ready to break the cycle, open a Bible to John 8:36 (“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”). Read it. Sit with it. Then ask: “What if freedom looks different than what AA told me?”

*What’s your “one more” equation? (Mine was 1=∞ beers.)*
